The forested section of wilderness above Lodgepole in Sequoia is shown here. Western Sierra is far more forgiving than the Eastern side. Except for the storms that come off the ocean, the Western side is somewhat more gentle. Eastern Sierra is in contrast with the West as it's more dry and stark. With peaks jutting upward, and the deep flat Owens Valley below, the Eastern Sierra is of completely different character. The weather, glacial activity, geological erosion, and macro-tectonic movement by and large explains the differences we observe between the two sides. Both are extreme and forgiving in their own ways.
