| Our lead instructor took
the time to talk about avalanche danger and snow composition. It
appeared he had everyone's unwavering attention, including mine. He
actually demonstrated the problem with an avalanche through a section of
differential melting around a large boulder. Carving out block of snow
while paying attention to underlying layers, he was able to effectively
show how a section of a snow field can break loose and slide. This
demonstration was in principle the same as the Rutschblock test ("Mountaineering, Freedom
of the Hills" 6th Ed., pg. 324).
There was some discussion about how to inspect a snow field through snow layer probing. We also talked about how to increase the likelihood of successful snowfield negotiation with some avalanche risk. |
