| About the Name
The name Exavius comes from the latin meaning, 'out-of-the untrodden'. Where people often don't go or find themselves, that's where I often choose to go. In more ways that one, all along the way, I continue to lead an unconventional life.

To climb every mountain and to trod in natural places is a dream neverending. This idea that inspiration is about a life lived among high places.
Among wide open spaces and in the depths of the Earth. To believe in something bigger than yourself and to believe you can fly.
Here are an ever growing collection of journal entries that seem to continue this quest of discovery. Not only of these places far and wide, but of what's inside. Inside the heart and mind. What are these places, these experiences, really without accepting, and knowing, and embracing the pull they have on your soul?
Enjoy these journal entries. At least until my strength and spirit holds out. Live big and live strong. See you on the other side.

About Exavius | My Place on the Web
My name is James Austin and I've had this passion for wilderness and alpine areas for well over 10 years now. I've seen alot of the Sierra Nevada and Sierra Madre mountains and more specifically mountain ranges, national parks, forests and areas much more remote than commonly visited areas found near cities or suburb areas. I've seen and experienced places that have shaped who I am and what I've become. Yet, the journey continues.

Military
Right out of high-school I joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an electronics tech on F-15 fighter aircraft. During that time, I've seen alot of Europe. Rock climbing in Luxembourg, hiking in Italy, backpacking in Germany, mountain ascents in Switzerland and Austria have all had an influence upon my life.
Spiritual
Most of all, my time in the military was about spiritual development with The Navigators, a U.S. based Christ-centered ministry that still goes strong today. I also learned alot about aircraft systems and what it meant to do my part in defending the United States while stationed in Germany. I served during the Reagan years.
College
After the military and my time with the Navigators, I enrolled in a private technical college and in four years earned a bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering. Several years thereafter, I earned a master's degree in business from Pepperdine. |

Sierra Nevada
It was during college that I picked up this interest in wilderness and outdoor places. As a natural extension to that, photography. Overtime, I've hiked many wilderness miles, backpacked numerous places and climbed dozens of mountains. I've grown to really love the outdoors.
Family
I've been married since 1990 and I'm the father of twins, one boy and one girl. We relocated from Southern California to Central California in 2005 and we're looking to stay around as long as it's the right place for us to be.
Interests
As life continues on we're involved in Boy Scouts, Awana, school/night college courses, and Search & Rescue volunteer work. We're moderately involved in a local church and far less so in the local community. |
New events and chapters of life come and go. As accomplishments, new endeavors, or changes come about, they may sometimes get posted to a web log found here at this site. Much more often than not this site is merely about an outlet to record personal musings, interests, and content that appears as an extension of my thinking and experiences. Much of this content is private and behind secure areas on an outside server, but much of it is public for those generally within the United States who wish to visit from time to time.
